School Library Media Program Evaluation (SLMPE) Rubric from NYSED
NYSED has developed, and made available on their website, a self-assessment instrument for use by teachers, librarians, students, administrators, parents, and school community members to assess the Library Media Program across 25 different "Essential Elements."

The SLMPE rubric was designed to help create a self-assessment instrument to support  elements in the LMP, and aid teachers, librarians, students, administrators, parents, and school community members in collaborative development of action plans for program improvements toward meeting higher standards and improving student achievement.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Elmont Memorial HS Library
On December 10, 2010, Elmont Memorial HS Library hosted a visit with Paul Volponi, author of several popular books for young adults. His books have won many prestigious awards, such as ALA Best Book, ALA Quick Pick, and New York City Library Book for the Teen Age. Mr. Volponi is a resident of Queens, NY, and taught for six years at Riker’s Island Correctional Facility, as well as in a drug rehabilitation center. He talked about how the students at Riker’s perceived the NY juvenile justice system. He also spoke at length about the writing process, and how he pulls his stories both from his own experiences, as well as from newspapers and TV newscasts. The students at Elmont HS thoroughly enjoyed their time with Mr. Volponi. He is an accomplished and energetic speaker who urged our students to write their own stories.
