Prezi Book Trailers
Lesson by Jennifer Bleicher
Howitt Middle School, Farmingdale, NY
As we know, book talks are a great way to generate enthusiasm for specific titles. A masterful book talk, like a movie trailer, provides just enough information about setting, plot, conflict, and characters without revealing the resolution. Questions are raised and remain unanswered. In short, the listener or viewer is left intrigued and wanting more.
This lesson combines elements of the traditional book talk and movie trailer through the use of a “Prezi,” a presentation using a free, online program (www.prezi.com). Students get involved by organizing information from books they have read, creating their own Prezis, and presenting to the rest of the class.
Included is a complete lesson plan in UbD format (Understanding by Design, by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe), a link to sample “book trailers” to show to students, a graphic organizer on which students can organize their ideas before creating their own Prezi book trailers, and a scoring rubric.
