IN THE SPOTLIGHT

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Floral Park Reads
On Tuesday November 16th, FPM was fortunate to have Misako ROCKS present to over 60 students and their parents. Misako was a very entertaining and energetic speaker who developed a love for comics and manga at an early age and drew her first comic at the age of 13. She moved to New York in 2001 and worked as a a puppeteer, face painter, animal balloon maker, and art teacher while still developing her own work. Her first break came when the Onion decided to use her illustrations for their now famous "Savage Love" column, which runs every week. Shortly thereafter, Misako scored a two-book deal with Hyperion, a three-book deal with Henry Holt and a writing gig for Archie comics. She has been featured in many magazines and newspapers, including Elle Girl and the New York Times. The BBC and NHK also featured her in a documentary about her comic book life. After her presentation, her books (compliments of the FPM PTSA) were raffled off and Misako did a book signing as well as posed for photographs. A great night was had by all.

After speaking, Claudia took time to answering questions from the audience of over 80 students and parents. Based of the evening attendance around 60 copies of Evernight were given out and then personally signed by Claudia Gray. It was a motivating and inspiring evening that will be remembered for some time.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Mepham High School Library, Bellmore NY

Lee Krinsky, a '97 Mepham graduate and first-time author returned to his old stomping ground on Oct. 20, 2009.
T he National English Honor Society (NEHS) hosted an author visit in the school library with a book discussion, Q&A,book raffle, and book signing. This event was our best-attended author visit so far with over 130students in attendance. Five students were randomly-selected to receive a paperback copy of Krinsky's novel.

Tragically, like one of the main characters in Krinsky's novel, The Longest Fall, one of the runners from the Wellington C. Mepham High School cross country team died in Krinsky’s junior year. The NEHS presented Krinsky with a check for $100 towards the Troy Depass Scholarship Fund. Each year this fund awards $500 each to a male and female student fromWellington C. Mepham High School. In order to raise additional funds for this scholarship, Krinsky is selling t-shirts with the "Atlantic" logo (the team from the book).

Scholastic Book Fair at Mepham HS Craft Fair at Mepham HS Craft Fair at Mepham HS

Other events at the Mepham Library this year included a Scholastic Book Fair and a Craft Fair. The Book Fair, their third, raised money to purchase books for children’s charities, including Toys for Tots, Kids in Distressed Situations Inc., and National Center for Family Literacy. At the annual Craft Fair, students, faculty and staff learned how to bead, knit, crochet and made wonderful gifts just in time for the holidays. The money raised was given to the Cancer Center for Kids @ Winthrop-Universioty Hospital.
